Headquartered in Oshawa, Ontario, H2O operates 10 hydroelectric generating stations located in Ontario and the United States representing over 180 MW of capacity.  In Ontario H2O Power is the third largest provider of hydroelectric power in the province and in Pennsylvania we operate as Allegheny Hydro.

H2O is majority-owned by PSP Investments, one of Canada’s largest pension investment manager, and minority-owned by BluEarth Renewables Inc., a Canadian independent renewable power producer that builds, owns and operates wind, run–of-river hydroelectric and solar generation projects across North America.  H2O Power, in conjunction with its ownership group, has an aggressive growth strategy which consists of capacity upgrades at seven of its original stations and growth through acquisitions.

The Position

Opportunity for growth through day-to-day mentorship and insight into the business model are natural features of the open and collaborative working environment at H2O Power. We are looking for a hands-on team player who is motivated by solving technical challenges and carrying a high degree of personal responsibility and accomplishment in their approach to work.

The successful candidate will be part of the Operations team working out of the Oshawa office, and under the direction of the Vice President Operations, will provide engineering support to daily and long term operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze operations events and provide recommendations, specifications and develop and implement corrective plans.
  • Monitor critical PPM programs for execution and performance. Provide assistance and guidance to field staff:
    • Protective relaying maintenance
    • Transformer maintenance
    • MV and HV breaker maintenance
    • Battery system maintenance
    • Transformer oil test program
  • Develop maintenance standards for implementation within H2O Power. Prepare remedial plans for correction of maintenance deficiencies.
  • System Reliability:
    • Conduct outage/event analysis and execute follow-up as required.
    • Identify equipment performance issues, prepare and direct implementation of corrective measures.
    • Maintain IESO reliability reports. Follow up on deficiencies identified.
  • Develop, update and modify Standard Operating Procedures relating to system operations and maintenance.
  • Engineering Studies:
    • Complete and maintain system studies for all H2O Power facilities, including;
      • Short circuit studies
      • Coordination studies for all generators, transformers and lines
      • Arc flash studies
    • Maintain database for all H2O Power protective relay systems settings, AVR settings and turbine control parameters.
  • Equipment and tools:
    • Design, implement and maintain desktop operating tools as required.
    • In conjunction with IT Section, develop and maintain monitoring tools in SCADA system Support and provide delivery of engineered designs for limited scope projects.
  • Capex: work in conjunction with Engineering Section to develop and validate specifications for new or upgraded systems and equipment.
  • Compile data and prepare regulatory reports.

Travel requirements

The Operations Engineer will be expected to travel to field sites in Ontario periodically. Normal frequency of travel is 1 visit/month.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
