Headquartered in Oshawa, Ontario, H2O operates 10 hydroelectric generating stations located in Ontario and the United States representing over 180 MW of capacity.  In Ontario H2O Power is the third largest provider of hydroelectric power in the province and in Pennsylvania we operate as Allegheny Hydro.

The Position

Job purpose

Reporting to the IS Manager, The Technical Systems Analyst position provides technical support and maintenance to all technology within the corporation with a primary focus on SCADA and its associated systems.  Duties will expand to support the business technology side of the company and experience increases. During the pandemic this position will work remotely until it’s safe to return to the Oshawa head office.

Duties and responsibilities

System Management

  • Plan and execute scheduled and emergency security updates to SCADA the systems in compliance with internal controls processes
  • Plan and execute modifications to SCADA controls, including integration of all related peripheral devices
  • Development and maintenance of all custom applications.
  • Develop functional and technical documentation, procedures, and operating instructions
  • Ensure all changes to systems are captured by systems change management process.
  • Work with client departments (primarily the Operations group) to understand business needs
  • Work with 3rd party technical support provider providing a local IT presence when required
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of planning, organizing, and project management
  • Maintain records of all system devices.

Control Systems support:

  • Support all digital control systems including PLCs, AVRs, turbine controllers and telemetry systems;
  • Provide support to field staff on activities related to control systems;
  • Maintain records for all related devices.

End User Support

  • Provide customer service by way of technical support to end users in the US and Canada.
  • Inventory of technology assets.
  • Install moves adds of hardware and software.
  • Follow up on existing calls on behalf of clients.
  • Document standard process and installs.
  • Maintain Client contact information.
  • Provide access to systems.
  • Develop and provide training on applications and systems as required.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Project Management -Develop and maintain project plans for implementations, upgrade and initiatives
  • Adhere to a Software development life cycle for any custom applications and scripts
  • Report development – Develop reports and or recommendations in a formalized manner for the enhancement of technology.


  • Hold a college diploma in Electrical/ Electronic Technology or university degree or college diploma in Computer Science, or equivalent, with additional training in digital control systems.
  • Familiar and able to follow standard SDLC Process
  • Hands on experience configuring data acquisition devices such as SEL RTAC, Allen Bradley or Modicon
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience supporting and configurating SCADA controls systems such as ABB S+ and HMI.
  • Experience configuring control device like PLC, RTAC, or meters
  • 2 years’ experience with protocols such as Modbus
  • 2 years’ experience with Analog and Digital controls
  • The following, while not minimum requirements, would be considered assets:
    • Experience supporting control systems in a Power Generation environment
    • Strong SQL Server, SQL Server stored procedures.
    • 5 or more years’ experience in design, maintenance and support of server-based SCADA systems and digital control systems and support of the control aspects of power generation facilities.
      • Cisco knowledge – install configure and manage
      • Cloud Computing – Microsoft Azure
      • Sharepoint – Configure and maintain
      • Windows Server – Install configure and manage
      • Firewall Configuration and monitoring
      • Network design from a security perspective
      • Experience working with VMware VCenter
      • Knowledge of Scripting and Development lifecycle.

Working conditions/Travel Requirements

  • Occasional travel within Ontario and occasionally to United States.
  • Participation on an on-call rotations with the rest of the IS team.
